Education and Social Empowerment
At BelRefugees, we consider access to education as a fundamental right, a tool of empowerment, and a powerful means of fostering social inclusion.
Our two schools, in Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve, provide welcoming, accessible learning spaces adapted to the realities of people on the move. All courses are taught by volunteer teachers.
━━━ Ecole Maximilien (Brussels)
Founded in 2016 in the heart of Maximilien Park, the Ecole Maximilien has become a key place for learning and meeting. Every week, it welcomes several hundred students — most of them in exile — into a warm and supportive atmosphere.
Thanks to the invaluable contribution of volunteer teachers, thousands of people have been welcomed, enrolled in classes, and guided through the school.
The Ecole Maximilien offers :
- Continuous classes, closed only on public holidays, with new students welcomed at any time of the year.
- A springboard to further training. Our courses provide strong language foundations and allow students to skip a level when enrolling in adult education courses. The school provides a smooth transition for those who have been deprived of education and helps build their confidence to pursue further training.
- Cultural openness through cultural activities : museum visits, concerts, cinema outings, etc.
- Familiarization with everyday life in Belgium, through lessons that integrate daily-life scenarios.
All information on registration and class schedules can be found on the Ecole Adultes Maximilien Facebook page.

The Ecole Maximilien is much more than a place of learning : it is a space of stability, trust, and future-building.

The courses include various French as a foreign language modules, Dutch classes, digital skills training with Connect2Belgium, as well as a module on the realities and challenges of integration in Belgium and Europe.
The opening of modules is announced on this page and in the Brabant Wallon | Hébergement Plateforme Citoyenne Facebook group.
